GARLAND Presented at CitA BIM Event

Brian Lahiff, GARLAND Director, presented a "MISA - A Structural Case Study" at the Dublin CITA BIM Event on 5th May 2016. The event hosted in the the Gibson Hotel, Dubin looked at real-world BIM case studies and experience to explain the real return on investment. The event included examples of how to maximize the value proposition for Engineers from design through construction and to post-construction applications. Other speakers at the event included Ronan Collins (MD of InteliBuild in Hong Kong), Greg Hayden and Anthony Condon (Ethos Engineering), and John McDonnell (EDC).

"MISA" is the €40m Mercer Institute for Successful Ageing, located on the St James's Hospital Campus in Dublin. GARLAND are providing Civil & Structural services to the Design and Build contractor, BAM Group Ireland. We are delighted to be delivering this project using BIM (Building Information Modelling) processes and tools.

The seven storey, state-of-the art facility is intended to provide a centralised facility for the institute’s clinical, education and training, research and creative life work with older people. The build will be completed by late 2015 and will create 250 construction jobs at its peak. The 15,000m² facility will include innovative early diagnostic and rapid access ambulatory care clinics, in-patient acute assessment, rehabilitation and a continuing care unit with 76 en-suite bedrooms and further ward spaces to accommodate a total of 100 beds. The building will also include research facilities, consultation spaces, meeting spaces, catering facilities, day areas, roof terrace spaces, a courtyard and naturally lit foyer and conference rooms.

The detailed design of the project has been delivered using BIM processes. The BIM process has been led by the design and build contractor in accordance with PAS 1192 to Level 2.

Brian is the convenor of the BIM committee of the Association of Consulting Engineers (ACEI). He is an active member of the CITA BIM Group and has lectured extensively on the subject.
